Asphalt is made up of stones and fine sands; asphalt cement acts as the glue to hold them together, further providing the pavement with the rich, black color. Unfortunately, over time, the binder begins to oxidize from exposure to the sun, rain, snow, and other elements, thereby causing the pavement to fade to gray, and crack from vehicle traffic. Additionally, exposure to motor oil leaks, landscaping, and household chemicals degrades the pavement.
